Flexible digital testing at TU/e: pass rate has increased and students understand the material better

July 15, 2025

For years, the second-year reactor science course was a major stumbling block for TU/e students of Chemical Engineering & Chemistry (CE&C). Only 30% passed the written exam. In 2017, John van der Schaaf therefore made a radical change. He changed both the teaching and the assessment format. There are now five modules and five digital tests – and students decide for themselves when they want to take those tests. The result? The pass rate has risen to 70% and students understand the material better.

“Alleen als ze er echt niet uitkomen, komen ze naar de zelfstudieruimte of docent. Ze zijn dan echt goed voorbereid en hebben al veel zelf uitgeprobeerd.”
