eduGenAI expands pilot, taking steps towards a safe and responsible AI service
There is a growing need for safe and responsible generative AI solutions in tertiary education (vocational training schools, universities of applied sciences and research universities) in the Netherlands. eduGenAI addresses this by providing a platform that supports institutions in using AI safely and responsibly. Starting in May, the eduGenAI pilot environment will be made more widely available. This will allow us to learn together and further develop and expand the service.
eduGenAI is a project run by SURF/ Npuls that focuses on developing a safe and responsible AI service for education. The platform offers institutions the possibility to use generative AI in ways that align with their needs and purposes. This is done in a controlled pilot environment where institutions can actively test and improve the future service.
Project to be expanded from May 2026
Starting in May, the eduGenAI pilot environment will be expanded in phases. Current participants in the pilot, such as educational institutions, will be able to add users themselves – including students, teaching staff and support staff. Later this year this project will be made accessible for other institutions so that they too can experiment with the possibilities of eduGenAI.
In the second half of 2026, a number of customisation options will be added. For instance, the option of choosing which AI models to use or to establish links with their own databases and systems. This offers greater flexibility and makes it possible to better align generative AI solutions to specific educational goals.

Prospects for the future: investing in digital autonomy
eduGenAI is more than just a technical solution; it is an investment in the future of education. By working and learning collaboratively, institutions and partners can build a platform that uses technology to strengthen education. One of our goals as a sector is for digital autonomy and innovation to be in step with and reinforce each other. This way, we can align tomorrow’s education with the values, needs and ambitions of institutions and their users.
By expanding the pilot and adding new options and functionalities, eduGenAI is making a big step towards a safe and responsible AI service that can be applied widely in education.
